The weeks before

Several weeks earlier
The basement toilet gurgles when the upstairs tub drains. Nobody connects it to anything.
A week earlier
Water stands around the floor drain briefly after laundry.
The weekend
Guests arrive, showers and laundry run back to back, and the drain overflows.

What happened next

Illustrative example. Not a real job or customer.

On Saturday evening someone notices a sewer smell and finds dark water spreading from the floor drain into the carpeted rec room next to the utility area.

  1. The owners stop all water use in the house, including the dishwasher that was running.
  2. Everyone is kept out of the basement; the breaker for the rec room is switched off because water is near floor outlets.
  3. A drain service clears the line and runs a camera, which shows roots at a joint in the lateral several feet outside the foundation.
  4. The insurer is called; the policy has a sewer backup endorsement with its own limit.
  5. A restoration contractor treats the loss as contaminated: wet carpet, pad and the lower drywall in the affected area are removed and bagged rather than dried.
  6. Hard surfaces are cleaned and disinfected, framing is dried, and readings are logged until normal.

The rec room was rebuilt after the lateral was repaired. Because the endorsement limit was lower than the total, the owners paid part of the rebuild, which led them to raise the limit at renewal.

Clean-water leak versus sewer backup

Clean supply leak

  • Carpet can sometimes be dried and kept
  • Drywall may be dried in place
  • Normal protective gear
  • Usually covered as sudden water damage

Sewer backup

  • Wet carpet and pad are removed
  • Affected drywall is usually cut out
  • Workers use protective equipment
  • Coverage often depends on a separate endorsement

Questions worth asking after a backup

  1. Can I have the camera video and a written note of where the roots were?
  2. Is the lateral repair a spot repair or should the line be replaced?
  3. Would a backwater valve help this house?
  4. What is my sewer backup endorsement limit, and does it include cleanup and rebuild?

Common questions

Could a backwater valve have prevented this?
A backwater valve stops sewage in the public main from flowing back into a house. This backup came from a blockage in the private lateral, so water from inside the house still had nowhere to go. A plumber can explain which protection fits which cause.
Why remove the carpet instead of cleaning it?
Carpet and pad soaked with sewage hold contamination deep in their fibers and backing. Industry guidance generally calls for removing porous materials touched by category 3 water rather than cleaning them in place.
